Hi there! I wonder if anyone can offer some advice over a problem that has just cropped up on my X308 4.0 Litre Sovereign (2000).
I started it up this morning (yesterday it was OK) and straight away on the screen came up the messages 'ASC NOT AVAILABLE' & 'TRAC NOT AVAILABLE' also the ABS light has come on and an amber warning light.
The brakes see to work fine, but I am concerned about the warnings and don't know if there is anything that I can do to check/rectify this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Kind Regards

I recently had a rather unusual and amusing electrical fault in my SS saloon. Can you guess what the fault was?

Symptoms:

I don't take my old car out when there is any chance of salt on the roads but to keep her happy I start her up once a month and run the engine at a fast idle until she reaches normal running temperature.
Whilst doing this I also slip the clutch to keep it from sticking to the flywheel and then I check all the electrics. I'd just checked the lights and trafficators and then tried the brake lights. They worked but each time I pressed the pedal the horn would beep. Not full volume and only for about a second. This only happened when the engine was supporting a positive charge. If I reduced the revs to a tick-over then the horn didn't sound, although it did sound in response to the normal horn button.

Now I have sheared a nut when trying to remove the wheel. Two more are very tight and I expect the same fate! I've bought 3 new nuts but can anyone advise how to get the remainder of the nut off the stud??? These are 16" alloys and the flat circular base of the nut remains.
Can anyone help, please?

Hello one and all
I am planning to buy an XK8; the one I have seen is a 4.2 with 78000 miles. Is there anything in particular that I should look out for? I am led to believe that the later engine has fewer gremlins than the older 4.0. I am also told that the gearbox is more robust; is this so? The car is for sale at a large garage specialising in prestige cars; do I need to do a HPI check when buying from a dealer? Would anyone have an idea of the value of an 04 reg car in what appears to be excellent condition with fsh?
Regards Stephen

Something that is a great upgrade on any of XF is the 2012 XFR rear diffuser.

It gives the rear of the car a really purposeful look and allows the exhausts to blend into the car in a way that the previous shape never did.

It is a simple bolt off and bolt on affair with no modifications needed. The parts are two piece, one already gloss black (the diffuser bit) and one is colour coded to your car. The attachment to the car is via plastic welding and anyone handy with a large soldering iron can handle this.

Initially Jaguar were selling the rear diffuser for pennies but once they realised that this was going to be a popular upgrade the price has gone up. I think the parts are now about £150, you will need some painting £80ish and then if you don't fancy the DIY fitting, perhaps £80 for someone to fit it for you.

Please note that this diffuser is for appearance only and I have total faith that it will have nearly no effect on downforce, but considering the XF is not a lightweight car in the first place, it shouldn't be an issue.

If you fancy a simple but very effective modification to improve the look of your backside, I highly recommend a diffuser ;)

Even though the XFR in standard form is quick, it was a burning desire of mine to see how much more the engine could be tuned to give. This became even more interesting when Jaguar released the XKR-S with no engine modifications other than an ECU remap to achieve its 545bhp.

Subsequently, I have had my ECU remapped and now the rolling road results are showing 589bhp and 500ft/lb. Even though the jump from 504 to 589bhp is difficult to feel in a specific way, what is most noticeable is the urgency that the engine now has. It wants to rev so much quicker, right the way through the rev range and once above 3000 rpm the torque gives you that scary "rollercoaster acceleration" feel :D

If anyone else has had fun playing around with the 5 litre engine, do let me know what figures you have managed.

I had a periodic noisy rear end rattle on my car, on the offside. I thought "Exhaust's loose" as most of us probably would. However, on having the car four-wheel tracked shortly after purchase, a check revealed a loose heat shield. The tyre bay lacked the tools do do anything with it, so I marked this one down as a future, non-urgent repair.
The symptoms are a loud clattering rattle which sounds worryingly serious. It's probably not there all the time (mine wasn't) as the shield's position can alter with bumps, and is virtually inaudible in the car.
Recently, the car has had to have the diff off and petrol tank out, and while it was having all this done, I asked if the heat shield could be fixed. Apparently, the shields are not of thick metal, and rust out slightly so they can slip past the retaining bolt heads. The answer? Fit bigger washers and a sealant to prevent a repeat of the problem. It's now solved. I'm told it's a very common fault.
So, if your S-Type sounds as though something disturbingly expensive is about to drop off, check this first.
